IENE's 3rd IENE Tirana Energy Forum to Focus on the Growth Potential of Albania's Energy Resources

IENE's 3rd IENE Tirana Energy Forum to Focus on the Growth Potential of Albania's Energy Resources The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) in partnership with SEA Consulting, is organizing the 3rd Tirana Energy Forum. This established IENE event, which will, this year, take place on Thursday, May 30, 2024, seeks to examine and discuss the current situation of Albania’s energy sector but also explore its growth potential including furthering of cooperation with the neighboring countries

The Forum will undertake a broader review of energy policies currently pursued in the SEE area and West Balkans in particular, with special reference on latest energy developments in Albania. At the same time, the Forum will seek to explore the full range of energy resources currently being utilized by Albania and the transformation of the power system infrastructure and the electricity market, while it will try to map out the challenges and prospects ahead.

Priority will be given to energy efficiency and cogeneration, which will be analyzed in view of their growing importance in buildings and industry, in the context of demand side management policies. The rapid increase of Renewable Energy Sources (mostly PV and wind) is associated with the need for additional balancing capacities where power generation by natural gas can play an important role.  Furthermore, the crucial role of base load will be analyzed for the operation of the region’s electricity systems, including Albania, with special reference on the introduction of gas. More specifically, the prospects of natural gas imports and the key role of natural gas for power generation in Albania will be discussed.

Also, the considerable hydrocarbon exploration and production potential of Albania will be analyzed in the context of planned investments and the important contribution to the finances of the country, resulting from crude oil exports.

Finally, the launch of the Albanian Power Exchange (ALPEX) and its first day-ahead auction for the delivery of electricity on April 12, 2023, its progress since then and the market coupling with Kosovo will be thoroughly analyzed, in conjunction with the increasing role of renewables (especially the growing trend in photovoltaics) in the country’s energy system, which all these years covers most of its energy needs through hydro.

Speakers will come from all major Albanian energy companies and institutions, but also from regional bodies including IENE.

This one-day event will take place at the Tirana International Hotel and is supported by major energy companies from Albania and Greece. Details concerning the Forum programme, confirmed speakers, and registration can be seen here
