On October 11-13 the 10th "Energy and Climate Change” international conference was held in Athens organized by the Energy Policy and Development Centre (KEPA) of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. As part of this conference KEPA convened the 2nd Green Energy Investments Forum where IENE had been invited to participate. In response to this invitation IENE participated through the Institute’s Executive Director, Mr. Costis Stambolis who presented a paper on "Green Investment Prospects in SE Europe”.
In his presentation IENE’s Executive Director stressed the importance for SE Europe of the various investments related to Renewable Energy Sources. According to IENE’s latest study, "The SEE Energy Outlook 2016/2017”, RES related investments correspond to a substantial part of the region’s total energy investments. More specifically RES related investments, including large hydro projects, until 2025 are estimated to reach some € 61.2 billion which account to approximately 22.3% of overall energy investments forecasted at €273 billion in the reference scenario. Whereas RES outlays could increase up to €70 billion in an optimum case scenario. The full presentation has been uploaded in the Reports section of this site.
KEPA’s annual ‘Energy Climate Change’ conference is considered as a point of reference for Climate Change related policies for BSEC and SEE countries, as it brings together various disciplines and participants from several countries of the region and beyond. As the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and KEPA’s Director Professor Dimitris Maurakis pointed out, "Our conference has offered the opportunity to scientists, market stakeholders and policy makers to present and discuss their research, policies and programs. It was quite encouraging that this time we have had distinguished participants not only from the countries of BSEC and EU but also from Australia, Norway and Algeria. This broadens our understanding concerning the state of the relevant international efforts to combat climate change and our perspectives for international cooperation.”
