Scientific Committees

IENE’s Scientific Committees play an important role in the operation of the Institute since they guide its scientific work by covering various sectors of the energy industry.

IENE’s current scientific committees are the following:

Electricity

Petroleum Refining, Storage and Trading (known as the Downstream Committee)

Chairwoman, Mrs. Liana Gouta

Hydrocarbons (known as the Upstream Committee)

Chairwoman, Mrs. Tereza Fokianou

Energy Efficiency

Natural Gas

Chairman, Mr. Theodoros Terzopoulos

Renewable Energy Sources

Chairman, Mr. Nicholaos Sofianos

Energy and Geopolitics

Chairman, Mr. Christos Dimas

International Advisory Group

Acting Coordinator, Mr. Costis Stambolis

The aim and role of IENE’s scientific committees is largely advisory. In some cases, a committee might be called upon in order to prepare a proposal, or a study, organize an event or a visit or undertake a technical appraisal. Each committee is required to be up to date on latest developments in its area of expertise concerning SE Europe as well as globally, in order to advise, through its chairman, IENE’s executive committee or the Board of Directors, of matters regarding its objective.

The driving force of each committee is the chairman who oversees its work. Depending on its task and the needs of the Institute, each committee can set up sub-committees where specialists of a particular subject can contribute by offering their services and experience. Each committee is generally free to decide independently regarding the scope of its work, its goals and targets as well as the methodology that will be followed.

There are four main tasks which direct the work of each committee:

(a) Information gathering, by exchanging views and presentation of projects, assessment of published work etc., in the committee’s area of expertise.

(b) Evaluation of the current situation in South East Europe and globally, as well as formulation of conclusions and identification of problem areas.

(c) Networking in SE Europe and beyond in the committee’s area of expertise.

(d) Preparation and submission of proposals to the Institute’s executive committee with the aim of carrying out specific tasks e.g. launching of research projects, preparation of studies, working papers, assessment of policies, organisation of workshops, symposia and conferences, participation in conventions and other events in Greece and internationally or undertaking of other tasks of general interest.

Scientific Council

The chairmen of the Scientific Committees, the Chairman of the Institute along with its General Secretary and IENE’s Executive Director participate in the Institute’s Scientific Council. The Council meets at regular intervals and oversees the work of the committees and it also advises the Institute’s scientific personnel. The current chairman of IENE’s Scientific Council is professor Pantelis Capros, a well-respected energy economist who is head of the Economic-Energy-Environment Modelling Laboratory (E3MLab) at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). Prof. Capros was also the first chairman of Greece’s Regulatory Energy Authority (RAE) from 1999 until 2004.
