Bulgaria's NPP Kozloduy Reconnects Unit 5 to Grid After Planned Maintenance

Bulgaria's sole nuclear power plant (NPP) Kozloduy said on Friday it reconnected to the grid its Unit 5 following a planned annual maintenance shutdown.

During the shutdown the 1000 MW unit was recharged with fresh nuclear fuel. Planned works, which are part of the extension of the unit's operational lifespan, were also carried out alongside works forincreasing the unit's thermal capacity to 104%, the power plant operator said in a statement.

Unit 5 was shut down for scheduled maintenance on April 22.

The power plant's other 1000 MW unit, Unit 6, operates at 100% of its capacity.

Kozloduy NPP remained with two operational units - Units 5 and 6 - after Bulgaria closed down four older units of 440 MW each to address nuclear safety concerns of the European Union prior to the country's accession to the bloc in 2007.
