More than 30 senior company executives and acclaimed experts from both Greece and Türkiye are gathering in Istanbul next Thursday, April 25, for a one-day colloquium convened by IENE in order to exchange views and discuss cooperation in a number of areas in the broad energy sector. This unique gathering is the result of consistent efforts by the Institute over many years in bringing together Greek and Turkish energy experts.

Initially fostered in the context of IENE’s annual South East Europe Energy Dialogue, which started in Thessaloniki in 2007, these contacts have expanded with cooperation now firmly established in distinct areas such as electricity, natural gas and renewables. Türkiye is one of the key countries in the region which IENE is tracking in terms of statistical information and analysis with Turkish energy experts regularly contributing to the Institute’s activities.

The Greek-Turkish Energy Forum is taking place at this particular time junction following the improvement of the overall political and diplomatic climate between the two countries, in light of the Athens declaration of last December, and in the context of the positive agenda now being developed by the two governments.

Greece and Türkiye have been working on joint energy projects since the early 2000’s. Today, Greece and Türkiye are partners in a number of key energy areas including electricity, gas, energy transmission, energy trading, renewables and energy efficiency. Over the last two decades Greece and Türkiye have established major electricity and gas interconnections across the Greek-Turkish border at Evros, in Thrace, and have developed active cross border transmission and trading in electricity and gas. In addition, a number of companies from Greece and Türkiye have invested in each other’s dynamic renewables energy sector.

With major energy challenges lying ahead in this part of SE Europe, especially with regard to energy security and decarbonization, and with Greece and Türkiye committed to lower GHGE’s, a lot remains still to be done with both countries benefiting by forging a closer relationship in the energy sector. Forging such a closer relationship is indeed an issue which will be hotly debated in the forthcoming Greek-Turkish Energy Forum in Istanbul next Thursday.
