'The Future is Electric' – EURELECTRIC Hosts Exhibition Outside European Parliament

Wednesday, 10 September 2014

Electricity utilities are busy reshaping our energy system for tomorrow: making it cleaner, more innovative and closer to customers. As the new European Parliament takes up its activities and the portfolios of the proposed Juncker Commission are announced, EURELECTRIC organises a two-day exhibition to present the sector to MEPs and their staff as well as to other EU officials and stakeholders. The exhibition takes place today and tomorrow on Place Luxembourg in Brussels, outside the European Parliament.

Structured around the key themes "climate”, "innovation” and "customers”, the exhibition will be complemented by a series of "quick-fire” debates on those key energy issues tomorrow afternoon.

"At the moment we see a great deal of interest in energy issues amongst MEPs and within the future European Commission. This is an excellent sign as, clearly, energy– and electricity – is the backbone of a healthy economy and better living standards. EURELECTRIC member companies account for 4% of Europe’s GDP but they take responsibility for 100% of European citizens. Our products and services drive growth; they create jobs and prosperity for 500 million citizens in Europe. If Europe gets its energy policy right, the economy benefits as a whole,” EURELECTRIC President Johannes Teyssen, CEO of E.ON, will say at the official opening of the exhibition later this evening.

The cocktail tonight will also feature a speech by MEP Herbert Reul, Head of the German EPP delegation and former Chair of ITRE.

The exhibition highlights future innovative technologies, focusing in particular on consumer and decarbonisation applications. It features smart meters, electric cars, carbon capture and storage demonstration projects, and other innovative applications to illustrate how the European electricity industry is changing in the context of the EU’s energy and climate policy. Exhibitors include EURELECTRIC and some of its many members and associate companies CEZ, EDF, Edison, ENEL, E.ON, Ormazabal, Landis+Gyr, RWE, and SSE.
