Slovenia's GEN-I Buys 3 Battery Energy Storage Systems in Bulgaria

Slovenian energy trader and supplier GEN-I Group said it has successfully completed the acquisition of three large battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Bulgaria.

"With the transaction completed this month, we have increased our total battery storage portfolio to 42 MW / 100 MWh," the company said in a press release earlier this week.

The newly-acquires systems are Belovo, Momchilgrad, and Parvomay 1, all of them in southern Bulgaria, with a total generation capacity of 30 MW and a storage capacity of 76 MWh. GEN-I acquired them via GEN-I Invest, its subsidiary in charge of development and management of new energy projects and investments in sustainable solutions.

GEN-I Group provided no financial information about the value of the acquisition and did not disclose the previous owner or owners of these BESS in the press release. A SeeNews request for comment went unanswered by the time this article was published.

GEN-I is no newcomer to the Bulgarian energy market. In early April, Bulgarian diversified group Synergon Holding said that its subsidiary Synergon Energy has signed a preliminary contract with GEN-I Invest for the sale of 100% of the shares of Sofia-based company Green Energy Storage. It set the deal's value at a base purchase price of 6.6 million euro ($7.5 million) minus all of the company's financial liabilities as of the closing date, plus bank balances and receivables as of closing.

Earlier this spring, Bulgaria's Commission on Protection of Competition said that GEN?I Invest has sought its approval to fully acquire Bulgarian companies Vanko-K-2008 and F Energy Solutions, both active in electrical energy storage via battery systems.

Following the acquisition of the battery storage system in Slovenia's Kidricevo, the entry into the Bulgarian market represents GEN-I Invest’s first investment outside Slovenia and an important milestone in its further development. The company’s goal is to reach 100 MW of installed battery storage capacity by the end of 2026 through further acquisitions.

GEN-I Group strengthened its investment activities abroad already in 2022 and 2024 with the construction of large solar power plants in North Macedonia, with a total capacity of 29 MW.

Gen-I acts both as an investor and as an operator of energy assets. In addition to developing and managing its own investments, it is also intensively expanding services related to the optimization and management of battery storage systems for external partners. "By the end of the year, we expect to manage approximately 800 MW of battery storage capacity under signed contracts," it noted.

Bulgaria is currently among the fastest-growing European markets in the integration of battery storage systems, and according to Gen-I, its strategic location, developed cross-border interconnections, appropriate regulatory environment, and supportive mechanisms create favourable conditions for the development of large-scale energy projects.
