Following a collaboration between the two institutes which started last year with an IENE event at EI premises on March 15, 2018(https://www.iene.eu/the-energy-security-and-energy-transition-in-see-presented-in-a-special-iene-event-in-london-hosted-by-ei-p4116.html), UK 's Energy Institute and the Athens based Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) are now going ahead with plans to organize a major event next fall in Londonwhich will focus on East Mediterranean as the new natural gas frontier. This one day conference will take place on October 8, 2019 and will be held at EI's premises in central London.(https://www.energyinst.org/whats-on/search/events-and-training?meta_eventId=61910c)
With the discovery of the giant Zohr field offshore Egypt and other discoveries in the region, most notably the Tamar and Leviathan fields offshore Israel, and latest discoveries in Cyprus's EEZ, the East Med has become a hot bed for hydrocarbon exploration & production activity. Most oil and gas majors are now active in the region, Including ENI,BP, Shell, Total and ExxonMobil.
Egypt is at the forefront of this frontier, having turned the corner from importing to exporting LNG. Israel is already producing substantial quantities and the first phase of the giant Leviathan field is about to come on stream, while Cyprus is continuing with its active and promising exploration programme as the latest gas find early in February this year at the Glafkos field clearly shows. Lebanon has also started exploration and is embarking on a new licensing round. At the same time Greece has also awarded its first offshore licenses, attracting major international players.
The scope of this EI event, which is organized in partnership with IENE, is to present a comprehensive picture of activities in this frontier region where production is increasing, new discoveries are increasingly being reported and generally exploration and production activity is booming.
