The new Greek NECP (National Energy and Climate Plan) was officially announced on Thursday 28 November by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and presented on Monday 2 December in a specially convened Colloquium in the Bank of Greece. The NECP that is open for public consultation until December 16 presents ambitious goals concerning RES, decarbonization and energy security.

The main priorities of the new plan include a sustainable development model in all sectors of the economy, development of the energy sector in accordance with environmental protection, formation of energy policy by weighting the cost-benefit ratio with energy transition, waste management and circular economy, creating a Greek energy hub that will contribute to EU’s energy security, the development of infrastructure and inclusion of Non Interconnected Islands (NIIs) in the national electricity grid, creation of an appealing investment environment which will support and promote energy transition, maximum utilization of state resources, extroversion and creation of jobs.

More specifically, the Greek new NECP’s targets which are higher compared to the previous one, require total investment of 43.8 billion euros in renewable and rational energy sources (RES) and 35% of RES penetration in final energy consumption by 2030. Also, the revised NECP aims for much higher RES penetration in the electricity mix of approx. 60%-64% by the end of next decade. In addition, the Plan calls for approx. 50% reduction of CO2 emissions whereas it was announced that in 2020 the Ministry of Environment and Energy will publish a tutorial of development (Master Plan) for post-coal era which will assist in energy transition.

IENE’s Chairman Costis Stambolis actively participated as an expert in the preparation of the NECP, being a member of the relevant standing government committee since February 2018. The Institute will also participate in the public consultation process and it is already preparing comments and proposals for tabling over the next few days.
