N-plant Kozloduy Gets Environmental Nod to Decommission Units 1-4

The Bulgarian Environment Ministry said its expert council has approved the investment proposal for decommissioning of Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the country's sole nuclear plant Kozloduy.

The decommissioning process will run in three stages, the ministry said in a press release.

Kozloduy’s Units 1 to 4 were launched into operation between 1974 and 1982. Each of the four pressurized water reactors has a capacity of 440 megawatts (MW).

In 2007 Bulgaria closed the four units to meet the conditions to join the European Union, land remained with two 1,000 MW units.

In March 2012 Bulgaria's government decided to add another 1,000 MW unit to the plant instead of building a new 2,000 MW nuclear plant from scratch in another Danubian town, Belene.
