Labor Strike in Turkey’s Renault Plants Continue on 12th Day

Strike of Renault workers in Turkish western province of Bursa has been ongoing for 12 days as the company administration refuse to compromise with their wage increase demand.

Although employees of several major car industry firms such as Ford Otosan, Tofaş, Mako and Coşkunöz got back to factories and resumed work, workers of Renault who have halted the twelve days ago, continue to resist in and outside the plants in Turkey's auto industry hub of Bursa. Reportedly, representatives of employees couldn’t get any positive results in negotiations with company administration. Negotiations stuck as the workers repelled Renault’s offer to pay each of them 1000 Turkish Liras (USD 400) in advance and 400 Turkish Liras (USD 150) in upcoming Ramadan holiday and promised to revise the general wage increase later. Continuing their resistance insistently, Renault workers demand the same conditions that Bosch provided to its employees in collective contract led by Turkish Metal Industry Workers Union (Türk Metal Sen).

Speaking to press members on behalf of workers on strike, worker named Erhan İmralı blamed Oyak Renault administration for leaving the negotiation desk first and threatening them in the latest message that was released from company’s head office.

"We are open to the negotiations and we were not the side that left the table first. We have almost found a common ground with the administration on May 20 but they suddenly changed their mind and withdrew their offers. As long as we get normal working conditions and wage increase we are ready to return back to our factory and work,” İmralı added.

On the other hand, CEO of Oyak Renault Ales Bratoz released a written message on Sunday calling employees to end their strike and start the production at the factory starting from Monday morning. CEO also promised to increase wages in a short time in his message.
