As the date gets closer for this joint IENE-ROEC event interest from participants is growing daily. This one half day conference is convened by the Romanian Energy Centre (ROEC) in partnership with IENE and will be held at the EC Representation Office in Bucharest on Wednesday, October 16. This unique event, which is organised under the auspices of the European Commission and sponsored by ENEL Greenpower, will seek to identify and address the huge challenges posed by Energy Transition in the South East European region as pressure builds up for accelerated decarbonisation across Europe.

Among others, key issues that will be discussed include global and European energy transition, decarbonization in South East Europe, clean transport and alternative fuels, energy investments in SE Europe with special reference to Greece and Romania and case studies from other countries (Norway, Denmark, Netherlands) concerning energy transition.

The conference will focus on two main subject areas: EU policy and regional realities and the role of natural gas and energy efficiency in energy transition. Under the chairmanship of Eugenia Gusilov (Director, ROEC) and John Desypris (Director Regulatory Affairs, Mytilineos SA), a selected panel of speakers will participate such as Jan Christoph Nill (European Commission, DG Clima), Lars Gullev (CEO, VEKS & vice chairman of IEA Executive Committee for District Heating and Cooling, IEA ExCo DHC), Costis Stambolis (Chairman and Executive Director, IENE), Teodor Chirica (President, FORATOM Europe), Otilia Nutu (Energy expert, Expert Forum), Dimitris Mezartasoglou (Head of Research, IENE), Emil Negut (COO, LNG Romania), Costas Theofylaktos (IENE’s Secretary General and energy efficiency specialist), Andrei Covatariu (Institutional Affairs, Enel) and Eugenia Gusilov (ROEC).

The event aims to highlight several aspects of the energy transition in the SEE region such as European policy and regulation, track record of Romania and Greece, main obstacles, policy and investment requirements, the role for natural gas in the medium and long term, the electrification in transport, District Heating Systems, carbon-neutral economy in Romania and Greece as well as the Scandinavian approach to Energy Transition and the appropriate pace for Energy Transition in SEE, particularly in Greece and Romania. The conference seeks to promote a public dialogue among energy professionals and contribute to the debate on decarbonization by considering two coal dependent EU countries like Greece and Romania.
