IENE Releases Two New Research Papers on Nuclear Shipping and Egypt’s Geopolitical Landscape

Two new papers have just been published by the Institute, which came to enrich its growing portfolio of research and analysis on critical regional and global energy issues. These new releases — Research Note No. 5 and Working Paper No. 35 — reflect IENE’s ongoing commitment to advancing knowledge, supporting informed policy dialogue, and shedding light on emerging trends in the broader energy landscape.

Research Note No. 5, titled “Navigating the Future: A Review of Nuclear Power in Decarbonizing Commercial Shipping”, examines the evolving role of nuclear technologies in maritime transport. Prepared by a multidisciplinary team of experts, led by IENE member Marie-Athena Papathanasiou, the study reviews the technical, environmental, economic, and regulatory dimensions of nuclear propulsion — particularly the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) — as the shipping sector moves toward full decarbonization. The Note offers a balanced assessment of the opportunities and challenges associated with this fast-developing field.

This latest Research Note on Nuclear Power in Shipping forms part of the Institute’s recently launched “Innovation in Energy” programme (https://www.iene.eu/programmes/main-programmes/9-innovation-in-energy/).

Also, Working Paper No. 35, on “Egypt’s Trajectory and Role within a Landscape Marked by Instability, Geopolitical Challenges and Security Dilemmas”, which provides a comprehensive geopolitical analysis of Egypt at a time of heightened regional uncertainty. Authored by Dr. Philip-Mark Spanidis, another active IENE member, the paper assesses Egypt’s socio-economic trends, energy landscape, security posture, and evolving international partnerships, offering essential insights into a country that remains pivotal to Eastern Mediterranean and MENA energy dynamics.

Both publications are now available for download through IENE’s website. Together, they highlight IENE’s continued effort to offer timely, high-quality research on the strategic developments shaping today’s complex energy environment.
