“Energy and Development” Conference to Focus on Market Operation and the Critical Geopolitical Issues – Programme Announced

Emphasizing on market operation, investment opportunities, as well as critical geopolitical matters, the 29th National Energy Conference “Energy and Development” of IENE, Greece’s oldest and most influential energy event, will take place on November 11 & 12, 2025, at the OTE Academy facilities in Athens.

With significant participation from top market executives and scientists, an expanded and renewed agenda and, also, a large number of speakers, this flagship event of the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE), will, once again, attract the interest of hundreds of executives from home and abroad.

The 29th “Energy and Development” Conference will highlight the key issues of the energy sector at a national, regional and global level. The Conference will feature more than eighty (80) distinguished senior executives of energy companies and organizations from Greece and abroad, as well as academics, scientists from major research centers, representatives of international organizations and well-known stakeholders, while important interventions are expected to be made by authoritative experts and analysts.

The 29th National Energy Conference “Energy and Development” is widely supported by companies of the energy sector and the industry, as well as by banks and law firms.

As every year, the IENE Energy National Conference “Energy and Development” is held under the auspices of Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEER), the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Waste and Water (RAAEY), and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Basic Topics of the Conference

The main topics to be covered in this major national event include electricity and natural gas markets in Greece and SE Europe, as well as electricity grids, emphasizing the issues involved in their further development and upgrade, with special focus on subsea electricity interconnections, energy storage systems, offshore wind farms and the difficulties faced in the construction and operation of supply chains.

Of particular interest is the large penetration of renewables in power generation and the problems created by load shedding, as well as energy efficiency and its role in the energy upgrade and improvement of the built environment. Also, of great interest will be the discussion on the role of nuclear power as part of the decarbonization drive and the shift towards clean fuels, as well as the discussion on Critical Raw Materials (CRMs).

As geopolitical tensions continue unabated, the discussion on energy security is gaining particular interest, both for Greece and the wider region of SE Europe and beyond. Within this framework, the significance of the Energy Trilemma is reemerging, with the various aspects and competing facets to be hotly debated at the Conference.
