On Saturday, November 15 the Hellenic Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) convened in Athens its 11th conference on “Energy in Buildings 2025”. This was an exceptionally well attended event with hundreds of participants and more than 20 exhibitors. The conference started with a plenary session on policy focusing on energy efficiency and related areas such as energy supply and demand and energy security. Then a number of parallel and highly specialised sessions followed which covered all different facets of energy building design and applications.
The Chairman of IENE, Costis Stambolis, was an invited speaker in the opening plenary session where he spoke on the relationship between energy demand, energy efficiency and energy security. In his presentation, which can be seen here, he stressed the importance of understanding energy demand and how it affects almost all aspects of energy use and energy supply.
Focusing on buildings, Costis discussed the situation on energy efficiency in the SE European region and explained the approach on energy conservation by various governments in the context of EU targets and guidelines. Concluding his presentation, he stressed how energy demand and energy efficiency are closely interlinked with higher efficiency systems leading to lower overall demand. Furthermore, he pointed out that, “controlling demand enables one -at regional, national and local level-to optimise the use of available resources whether these are conventional or renewable”.
