Greece’s new Electricity Market

Greece’s new Electricity MarketThe new market framework and the latest parameters which will shape Greece’s electricity market following the imminent launching of the Hellenic Energy Exchange was the main subject area which was presented in the two-day online training seminar, organized by the Institute of Energy for South East Europe (IENE) on September 15 and 16, under the auspices of the Hellenic Energy Exchange.

The President and CEO of HEnEx, Dr. George Ioannou, who opened the seminar, underlined in his presentation the extremely topical character of the educational event, since the Hellenic Energy Exchange is expected to start operating fully on November 1st.

The seminar, which followed two previous educational courses held last year, focused on the operation of the new electricity market by the Energy Exchange, in the context of the implementation of the Target Model of the European Commission, as well as the changes that will take place during the transitional period. Changes which, as explained by the Seminar speakers - distinguished experts, energy executives and academics - will lead to increased competition and greater transparency, thus working for the benefit of all participants and the final consumer.

The seminar participants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in regulatory and legislative issues and to be introduced to the new reality of the Greek electricity market, which is based on the operation of the European Target Model and the four sub-markets that will operate in parallel from the HEnEx platform. That is, (a) the Day Ahead Market, (b) the Intraday Market, (c) the Forward Market, (d) the Balancing Market, operated by IPTO. The gradual integration of electricity markets at regional level and the increasingly important role of energy exchanges are two more factors that determine the energy landscape in Greece and Europe, as was presented by the speakers of the seminar.

The Chairman of the Institute of Energy for South East Europe, Costis Stambolis, underlined IENE’s contribution with regard to the launching of HEnEx’s new market: "IENE actively participates and supports the effort of HEnEx for the introduction of the Target Model through highly focused educational courses addressed exclusively to senior executives and market operators. In this context, we were very happy to welcome such a diverse audience at the seminar, since all those who attended were executives of large energy companies, not only from Greece but also from 5 other countries: Cyprus, England, Spain, Portugal and Israel. IENE will continue to provoke much needed discussion but also provide, analysis and synthesis and most importantly address the "hot” energy issues which confront us globally, but also in the wider region of Southeastern Europe ".
