TERNA ENERGY’s investment for the construction of a wind park with a capacity of 73.2 MW on St. George Island is entering its final stage with a goal to have it in operation by the end of 2015.
It is a very important investment of EUR 150 million that will have multiple energy and environmental benefits. The annual produced electricity will correspond to the coverage of the energy needs of over 40,000 households per annum, while it will contribute to the savings of over 60,000 tons of oil and the reduction of over 180,000 tons of emissions per annum.
The wind park of TERNA ENERGY on St. George Island constitutes the largest investment in the area of electricity production from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) being implemented in Greece and the most innovative one since it incorporates a submarine connection between the island and the continental system. In essence, it is the first on shore wind park with characteristics of an off shore wind park installation, exploiting the high wind potential of the Aegean Sea, to such a large scale.
St. George Island is located in the sea area south of Cape Sounio. The wind park which is being constructed on the island will be operating as an autonomous electricity production unit. The connection with the National Transmission System will be implemented via a new substation (20/150kv), which will be constructed on of St. George island and nearby the wind generators. Following the completion of the substation, the wind park will supply energy to the National Transmission System via a submarine cable connection ending at the "Mikro Lavrio” substation.
The total installed capacity of TERNA ENERGY Group amounts to 640 MW. The Group has installations of 386 MW in Greece, 138 MW in the USA, 86 MW in Poland and 30 MW in Bulgaria.
At the same time, the Group has RES installations, currently under construction or ready for construction, with a capacity of 226 MW, in Greece and abroad.
Overall, the Company operates, is constructing or has full licensing of 882 MW of RES installations in Europe and America.
The Company is targeting to reach almost 1,000 MW of RES projects in operation in all countries where it has presence, over the following years.
