Israel's Nofar Energy to Develop 860 MWh in BESS Projects in Romania

Israeli renewables investor Nofar Energy said it has signed a limited notice to proceed (LNTP) and lump-sum procurement agreement worth around 80 million euro ($93.1 million) with an undisclosed battery supplier for the development of two battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Romania, totalling around 860 MWh.

The projects will be developed in the communes of Iepure?ti and Ghimpati in Giurgiu County, southern Romania, and will have capacities of 160 MW/340 MWh and 120 MW/520 MWh, respectively, the company said in a social media statement on Sunday.

Both storage facilities will be co-located with Nofar’s existing solar projects, a 169 MW installation in Iepure?ti and a 146 MW project in Ghimpati. Nofar said both BESS projects are scheduled to be connected to the grid within nine months.

Founded in 2011, Nofar Energy is listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. It is specialised in the development, operation and maintenance of PV plants and wind farms. The company’s activities include ground-mounted, floating and rooftop solar projects as well as electricity storage projects, according to its website. The company entered the Romanian market in 2021 and currently is one of the major actors in the local renewables sector, with a solar portfolio of around 850 MW and a 2.3 GWh storage pipeline.
