Bulgaria Launches EU's Largest Battery Storage System

Bulgaria inaugurated a 124 MW/496.2 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), the EU's largest, in the north-central city of Lovech, the municipal government said. The project represents an investment of 147 million levs ($85 million/75.2 million euro) by Sofia-based renewable energy company Advance Green Energy, state news agency BTA reported.

The BESS, located in the Balkan industrial park, consists of batteries, transformer stations, inverters, a control system and full technical security, the Lovech municipal government said in a statement on Thursday.

"The facility, built from 111 battery containers on the territory of Lovech, will help Bulgaria’s energy system remain the most stable in the region," energy minister Zhecho Stankov said in a statement by the ministry. "We are the pillar of the Balkans and Southeast Europe in balancing electricity systems." The BESS is the first step toward the national goal of reaching 10,000 MWh of operational battery storage within the next year, he added.

Advance Green Energy, founded in 2024, is active in the construction and operation of renewable energy storage facilities, according to the commercial register.
