UK Youth to Design Future of EV Charging Stations

The U.K. government on Tuesday launched a competition for 7 to 19 year olds to design the country's next generation electric vehicle charge points. The "Eco Innovators" competition calls on students to submit creative designs for public electric vehicle charge points, a crucial part of the U.K.'s plans for cleaner transportation.

The winning designs from each of the two age categories, the first of which is from 7 to 14 and the second from 14 to 19, will have their sketches made into real-life prototypes with support from industry experts. Their charge points will be displayed at the Electric Vehicle Experience Center in Buckinghamshire, about 50 miles northwest of London.

The government is supporting the transition to greener transport with a £1.5 billion ($1.9 billion) investment with the aim of ending the sale of new conventional diesel and petrol-fuelled cars and vans by 2040. The competition is open to students from May 21 to Oct. 18.
