A new battery manufacturing facility, HYVE, capable of producing up to 30,000 battery packs annually for electric vehicles and energy storage systems opened in Sunderland in the northeast of England, battery manufacturer Hyperdrive Innovation company announced on Thursday.
Hyperdrive has invested £7 million in its manufacturing capabilities since 2014. The company has also invested £50,000 in a software system to help with planning decisions, and to enable efficient stock control. "HYVE enables us to deliver a high-quality product, providing our customers with the right energy at the right time," Chris Pennison, CEO of Hyperdrive, said.
"We are committed, through our Industrial Strategy and Automotive Sector Deal, to establishing the U.K. as a world leader in battery technology and the HYVE facility will help play a crucial role in us delivering on this ambition," Andrew Stephenson, U.K. business minister said. A total of 59,945 electric vehicles were registered in 2018 in the U.K., according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
