Turkey's natural gas consumption will decrease by around 2 billion cubic meters by the end of this year to 52 billion cubic meters, compared to 2017, according to Yasar Arslan, chairman of the Union of Natural Gas Distribution Companies of Turkey (GAZBIR) on Wednesday.
Arslan told Anadolu Agency that last year Turkey consumed around 54 billion cubic meters in total. A 2 degree temperature increase in the first seven months of this year resulted in a reduction in Turkey's gas consumption by 7.5 percent over the same period, he explained.
More critically, he said that household consumption also decreased by 12 percent in the first seven months of 2018. "There will be one more million houses to consume natural gas by the end of this year. Even with this addition, consumption will decrease," he affirmed.
Turkey's annual natural gas consumption reached a historic record high of 54 billion cubic meters in 2017. In 2017, the year-on-year natural gas consumption in Turkey jumped by 16.3 percent, according to the Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority's (EMRA).
Total consumption increased from which a rise of 19.2 percent in natural gas imports was seen to reach 55.2 billion cubic meters in 2017 from 46.3 billion cubic meters in 2016, according to EMRA's data. The latest records in 2014 showed 48.7 billion cubic meters in consumption and imports of 49.2 billion cubic meters.
The number of Turkish natural gas subscribers also increased by 1.1 million to 13.6 million in 2017, the data shows.
