In Serbia, an estimated 300,000 tons of hazardous waste is stockpiled at companies that are being restructured or are in bankruptcy proceedings, says Sinisa Mitrovic. Mitrovic is a consultant of the committee on the environment and sustainable development at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia.
The waste has been inventoried and its condition ascertained, and now the funds required for its disposal must be found, in the country or abroad, he said. Cleaning up hazardous waste stockpiles at companies such as Zupa in Krusevac, EI Nis, Zorka Sabac and Prva iskra Baric, among others, is the basic prerequisite for getting foreign investors interested in them, Mitrovic noted.
The issue of hazardous waste is a national security issue and the state must find the best model for its disposal, Mitrovic said reports B92.
