European Assoc. Demand Adding Green Deal in Recovery Plans

The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) and 31 European associations representing renewables and energy efficiency value chains called EU' leaders for including the European Green deal into the COVID-19 recovery plans, EGEC said Tuesday.

The European associations sent a letter to the European leaders and decision-makers urging them to link the European Green Deal and the stimulus package in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The European Green Deal, part of EU's bid to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, provides a roadmap with actions to boost the efficient use of resources by moving to a clean, circular economy, restore biodiversity and cut pollution.

"The immediate and necessary, yet unprecedented measures currently taken to fight the COVID-19 pandemic have brought Europe’s economy to a near-to-complete standstill," the signatories warned.

The signatories said that investments in a zero-carbon infrastructure and innovative solutions are the best and most cost-effective route to economic recovery.

They called on the European Commission to use the stimulus packages to accelerate investments in energy efficiency, renewable heating and cooling, electricity, mobility, zero-carbon buildings, and industrial processes.

The signatories also suggested that ensuring ongoing supply of clean energy and ongoing investments in energy transition can continue in the current pandemic as essential services.

"COVID-19 has forced the world into an economic pause. Now, you have the power to use the Green Deal to restart Europe and drive its economy with a focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy across all sectors. Such investments are both labour-rich and shovel-ready," the signatories said.
