Romania’s Ministry of Energy has reportedly proposed three areas in the Romanian sector of the Black Sea for concession for offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 3.1GW.
The ministry said the first phase comprises one proposed 1.9GW area and two of 600MW each, according to local news outlet Mediafax.
The three concession areas are suitable for offshore wind projects with fixed foundations, feasible using current offshore technology and avoid areas of high sensitivity, added the report.
The Ministry of Energy has set an objective through the Romanian Energy Strategy 2025-2035 of installing 3GW of offshore wind capacity by 2035.
Analyses in the World Bank Offshore Wind Roadmap for Romania report estimate that the Black Sea has total technical offshore wind potential of approximately 76GW, with average wind speeds exceeding 7.5 m/s.
Of the 76GW potential, about 22GW could be installed using fixed foundations and 54GW through floating technologies.
Strategic documents identify installing 3GW by 2035 as a moderate scenario, rising to 7GW under accelerated development.
