Romania: President Dan Announces Nuclear Partnership with World Bank

The head of state also said that he had discussed with the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, the common priorities for cooperation in the nuclear and liquefied natural gas sectors.

A future partnership with the World Bank for investments in the nuclear energy sector has been announced by the Romanian President. Nicosor Dan On his return from the Economic Forum following the Three Seas Initiative Summit, the head of state also said he had discussed with the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, of the common priorities for cooperation in the nuclear and liquefied natural gas (LNG) sectors. Dan emphasized that Romania will be the first country in which the World Bank intends to invest in the nuclear sector.

"Regarding nuclear power, our common interest is the rehabilitation of reactor 1, a project already at an advanced stage, and the construction of reactors 3 and 4 at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. We are fully committed, while the US side intends to finance it," he stated. The president described this as "an economic and financial partnership" for the development of reactors 3 and 4. Regarding the vertical gas corridor, Dan highlighted the United States' interest in entering the European market with LNG, adding that it is in the public interest to reduce dependence on Russian supplies.

"We want an American presence in Romania and we want this economic configuration to be favorable to our country," he said. Next week, at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Romania will begin discussions with regional countries on the details and volumes of the potential project.
