North Macedonia Unveils 5.7 Billion Euro Renewables Plan

North Macedonian Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska presented the Annual Plan for the Construction of Energy Facilities for 2026. As part of the plan, 284 initiatives were submitted to the Ministry by investors in response to the public call launched in September 2025. After the evaluation, 67 applications were approved for facilities exceeding 1 megawatt (MW).

These include:

  • 59 solar plants with an installed capacity of 3?gigawatts (GW), representing an investment of around 2.1?billion euros
  • 7 wind farms with a total capacity of 907?MW, amounting to 1.1?billion euros in investment
  • 1 gas-fired cogeneration plant with an installed capacity of 495?MW, requiring 445.5?million euros in investment

The total capacity included in the plan is 4.4?GW, with an estimated total investment of 3.7?billion euros.

A significant segment of the plan comprises electricity storage systems:

  • 77 integrated storage units, as part of existing or new power plants, with a total capacity of 1.4?GW and 3.5?GWh of storage
  • 19 standalone storage units, with 637?MW capacity and 1.5?GWh storage

In total, the plan covers 96 energy storage units, with 2?GW total capacity and 5?GWh of storage, representing an estimated investment of nearly 2?billion euros.

Local initiatives and grid analyses

The annual plan also includes 56 energy facilities stemming from the energy plans of 7 municipalities. This comprises 52? MW of solar capacity and 61 storage units. The plan includes network and market analyses to ensure system stability and guide investments in new energy facilities.
