Czech power utility group Energo-Pro said on Friday that it has commissioned its 10.75 MW/24.31 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bulgaria, investing 4.23 million euro ($4.8 million) in the project.
The BESS, which is located in the northern town of Gorna Oryahovitsa, is Energo-Pro's first in the country and represents an important step in the development of a modern and sustainable electricity infrastructure, contributing to more efficient management and balancing of the electricity system, the company said in a press release.
The project, which was co-financed under Bulgaria's Recovery and Resilience Facility, was carried out by Energy-Pro Bulgaria and will be operated by the company's other local unit - Energo-Pro Energy Services. The expected battery life of the BESS is 10 years or over 7,000 charge and discharge cycles.
Founded in 1994, Energo-Pro owns and operates 54 hydropower plants in 5 countries, according to company information. In Bulgaria, the company owns hydropower producer Energo-Pro Bulgaria and electricity distribution company Energo-Pro Varna, alongside its three subsidiaries - Electrodistribution North, Energo-Pro Sales and Energo-Pro Energy Services.
