Albania's energy regulator ERE said it has initiated procedures for the licensing of local electricity producer Fier Thermoelectric, a subsidiary of Greek natural gas company Depa Commercial for the construction of a 170 MW gas-fired thermal power plant (TPP).
ERE invites interested parties to submit written comments and opinions on the licensing procedure by July 8, it said in a notice earlier this week.
The power plant's designated location near the southwestern city of Fier is close to an exit point of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which carries natural gas from Azerbaijan to Europe via Albania, allowing Fier Thermoelectric to directly receive gas from TAP, according to documents published by local fact-checking platform Faktoje.
The Albanian government granted permission for the construction of the power plant in December, saying the project a fully private investment. The facility is set to start producing electricity within three years.
Depa Commercial registered its Albanian subsidiary in 2022, according to Albania's business register.
