Energia, Gas & Electricity Supplier Ireland will invest €3 billion in Ireland's renewable energy generation over the next five years, according to the company's announcement on Monday.
"The investment will fund an increase in the company’s capacity, adding as much as 1,500 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy generation to the grid," the Irish Times newspaper reported. Energia, which is ultimately owned by U.S. investor, I Squared Capital, said its infrastructure investment would create an additional 200 jobs at the group, bringing its total to 1,000. There will also be an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 construction workers involved in the five-year program.
The company plans to focus on onshore and offshore wind farms, solar power, hydrogen fuel generation and bio-energy facilities. Under the Irish government’s climate action plan, Ireland wants to increase the amount of energy produced from renewable sources from the current 30% to 70% by 2030. Energia has operated in Ireland for 20 years and employs 800 people across the island.
