Chevron Romania Exploration and Production has received a building permit to drill a well for shale gas exploration in the northeastern county of Vaslui, the county council said on Wednesday. "The permit has been issued legally. Chevron had all the necessary documents, including a permit from the National Agency of Mineral Resources," the chief architect of Vaslui county council, Marian Besliu, told SeeNews over the phone.
The permit is valid one year, after which it can be extended. Chevron can start drilling any time, once the permit is issued, he added.
The well will be located in Silistea village.
In July, Chevron Romania Exploration and Production received the environmental protection agency's permission to drill exploration wells Popeni 1A, Silistea 1A and Paltinis 1A, all three located in Vaslui county.
In May 2012, the Romanian government imposed a moratorium on shale gas exploration. The moratorium, which ended in December 2012, has not been extended.
Controversial shale explorations have triggered protests in Romania, supported by activists from neighbouring Bulgaria.
