Albania Launches First Tender for Wind Power Plants - EBRD

Albania launched its first public call for the construction of utility-scale on-shore wind power plants with a total capacity of 100 MW, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) said.

The Albanian government invites developers of individual projects with a capacity of between 10 MW and 75 MW to apply with proposals for sites in the first phase of the tender by the middle of June next year, the EBRD said in a statement on Monday.

The total tendered capacity may be increased to 150 MW in the coming months, in line with the country’s renewable energy targets. The government is expected to announce the successful bidders in the first half of 2023.

The tender will be run by the Albanian ministry for infrastructure and energy, which will organise a conference for prospective bidders later this year to provide clarification and answer questions.

The EBRD has been supporting the Albanian authorities in the introduction of competitive procurement processes for renewable energy projects.

The new tender follows the successful award of EBRD-supported tenders for the 140 MW Karavasta and 100 MW Spitallë solar power plants in recent years, the EBRD noted.

The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) is providing funding for the technical assistance that covers the new tender as well as regulatory work in the energy sector to facilitate the introduction of auctions. SECO is providing a grant in the amount of 650,000 euro ($773,800), according to an earlier statement by the EBRD.
