IENE Released the English Edition of its Latest Report on the Greek Energy Sector

The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) has just released the English language edition of its Report on the Greek Energy Sector 2024. This is a comprehensive analysis of developments and trends shaping Greece’s energy landscape. Prepared by IENE’s research team and first published in February 2025, this fourth edition continues the Institute’s tradition of delivering in-depth, data-driven insights on energy markets, infrastructure, policy goals, and strategic challenges in both the Greek and broader European context.

The Report provides a detailed overview of global and national economic trends that influence energy demand and supply, situating Greece’s energy trajectory within broader macroeconomic conditions. It then reviews the dynamics of the global and European energy markets, highlighting ongoing shifts in energy prices, supply security concerns, and the accelerating role of renewable energy sources. National and EU policy targets, particularly regarding energy security and decarbonization goals, are examined to provide context for Greece’s evolving energy strategy.

A major focus of the Report is the structure and performance of the Greek energy market. It offers thorough analyses of oil and petroleum products, natural gas, solid fossil fuels, and electricity. Special attention is given to Greece’s electricity system, including demand trends, market structure, and the progress of grid interconnections. Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are discussed extensively, encompassing production, installed capacity, and technologies such as onshore and offshore wind, solar PV, hydroelectric, and geothermal power.

The Report also explores critical cross-cutting themes such as greenhouse gas emissions, the deployment of CO? capture and storage solutions, and the promotion of energy efficiency and cogeneration. Regulatory and legislative developments that affect market design and the licensing of new energy projects are highlighted, along with Greece’s role in regional energy cooperation in SE Europe. Strategic investment needs and financing mechanisms for energy infrastructure up to 2030 are presented to support planning and decision-making.

In its concluding chapters, the Report outlines prospects for further development of Greece’s energy market, identifying opportunities and challenges in achieving national and EU energy targets. Emphasis is placed on diversifying energy supply, strengthening energy security, and accelerating the transition toward a climate-neutral energy system. This Report serves as an essential reference for policymakers, industry stakeholders, researchers, and all parties engaged in Greece’s energy future.
