Turkey Receives First US LNG from Sabine Pass

Turkey imported its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the U.S., according to Turkish private energy company EgeGaz on Wednesday.

According to the EgeGaz officials, the company imported 135,000 cubic meters of LNG, which was produced in the U.S.

This is the first U.S. LNG cargo produced from shale gas to reach Turkey.

The 135,000 cubic meter Knutsen LNG tanker arrived at the Aliaga LNG terminal located in Izmir in the western part of the country at the beginning of this week.

Portugal was the first European country to receive LNG cargo from Cheniere’s Sabine Pass LNG export terminal in Louisiana in April.

Turkey has two LNG terminals -- Aliaga which is fully operational to gasify 16.5 million cubic meters (mcm) of LNG per day, and the Marmara Ereglisi to the west of Istanbul where three tanks can gasify 22.5 mcm a day at full capacity, but the terminal is currently only processing 18 mcm a day.
