Romanian State-Owned Gas Producer to Invest Over EUR 136 mln in Gas Storage Facility

Romanian state-owned gas producer Romgaz will invest over EUR 136 million in the gas storage facility in Sarmasel, Mures county, to increase its natural gas storage capacities. The facility will become operational in April 2024.

The auction for the feasibility study will take place in February next year.

Another EUR 87 million will be invested in the private gas storage facility Depomures, owned by Engie and Romgaz. This is due to be completed in 2022.

Romgaz operates six gas storage facilities in Romania, with a total working capacity of 2.92 billion cubic meters. It also owns a stake of 41% in the Depomures gas storage facility together with Engie.

Romania wants to conclude a memorandum with Serbia for building an interconnection pipeline between Arad and Mokrin. This would have 80 kilometers and would increase the level of energy security in the region, according to a document of the Energy Ministry on the security of gas supply. The total investment would amount to EUR 43 million, of which the gas pipeline on Romania’s territory is estimated at EUR 37 million. The investment is expected to be completed in 2026.
