A major IENE Study which deals with the prospects for the Electric Vehicle Market in Greece, and SEE and potential business opportunities is approaching completion. This is a new multi-client study project which commenced in November 2017 and is backed by some of Greece’s leading companies including Systems Sunlight, the Mytilineos Group, HEDNO S.A. (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator S.A.) and the KG Law Firm. The study sets out to explore the current situation in global and European markets and maps out potential developments in electric vehicle penetration in Greece and SE Europe.

The transition of the energy sector towards electrification coupled with high penetration of RES, which has become imperative for the implementation of the climate change mitigation scenarios for human activity, set by COP21, dictates the adoption and development of electric mobility. Electric Vehicles (EVs), as a disruptive technology, face various obstacles in their path towards adoption, mainly the high cost of acquisition andthe difficulties in overcoming the limited driving range, the long charging time and the lack of publicly available charging stations. The observation of the EV market has shown a very high learning curve, which prominent analysts estimate that it could lead to deployment 60 million new EVs per year by 2040. This is expected to occur as aresult of the rapid decline of the cost intensive EV battery component and its technology development towards higher energy density, which consequently willmake EVs more competitive against conventional ICE vehicles.

Currently, this high EV penetration rate is mainly achieved worldwide due to the aggressive adoption policies, implemented in the more mature markets, which increase the value proposition of EVs and mobilize the manufacturing forces towards the formulation of economies of scale. The achievements of standardization and interoperability have helped EV technology to develop further into peripheral markets like the market of South East Europe, while smart grid principles are dictating the future of EV charging to be one of grid integration and ancillary service provision. In this landscape small markets like the Greek one have to adapt appropriately taking into account their social and behavioral peculiarities. As such the aim of this IENE study is to give an indication for the present and the future of EV markets in Greece, South East Europe and globally and describe the internal interactions in order to explore, investment opportunities, new types of employment and dynamic entrepreneurship. Consequently, this study will ultimately provide an indication for further needs of undertaking feasibility studies for market development with regard to power generation, power distribution and socioeconomic cost allocation for infrastructure installations.
