In an effort to upgrade and revamp IENE’s basic information service, the ‘SEE Energy Brief’, a new version of the ‘Market Insight’ report was released on January 10. The revised ‘Market Insight’ report will from now be published on a monthly basis but in two different versions which will alternate.

The first version which was sent exclusively to IENE members earlier this week focuses on the prevailing ‘Market Forces’, globally and in SE Europe. This version provides first an analysis of the global situation with respect to the forces at play which affect energy markets, on account of geopolitical and economic factors. The differentiation between "Weak and Accommodating Forces” and the "Strong and Destabilising forces” helps the reader understand the positive and negative pressures from a geopolitical perspective which apply to the global economic and trade system. Then a more pointed analysis follows, directly relevant to energy prices, where again we consider the "weak” and "strong” forces. A special effort has been made to refer to latest developments in SE European markets which are also analysed in terms of the current underlying energy market forces in the region.

The second version the "Market Insight” report which will appear next month will focus on latest developments in various energy resources and industry moves related to specific projects and products. The aim will be to see what the energy industry thinks and does across a wide spectrum of activity. Like the first version this second version of "Market Insight” will contain information both from the global scene and where possible will report on latest SE European projects. It is hoped that between these two versions the reader will be able to keep abreast of what is really happening in the markets and how these evolve over time.

It is perhaps useful to remind what "Market Insight” is all about. This unique newsletter, part of IENE’s "SE Europe Energy Brief”, is examining global and regional developments with a critical eye while it searches for the factors and forces which govern market dynamics. Whether these are to be found in geopolitical factors, market developments, price movements of basic commodities or in mergers and acquisitions or disposals, the identification of the responsible forces is of paramount importance in our effort to decipher how markets function. In the case of energy markets this task gets rather complicated as an abnormally large number of parameters enter the equation. Untangling and understanding how energy markets behave and what lies beneath is proving at times as challenging as playing an impossibly difficult game of chess. Recognizing the global forces at play is helpful though in our effort to track and understand energy market behaviour and by extension try to understand developments in our region
