The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) is organizing, once again in Athens, its annual National Energy Conference "Energy and Development 2016” now in its 21st edition.

In view of the momentous and highly destabilizing geopolitical events of the last few months, including the high incidence of terrorist attacks, the ongoing fighting in Syria and Iraq, and rising tensions in SE Asia and the Middle East, this year’s conference theme will focus on "Investing in Energy in an Uncertain Economic and Geopolitical Environment. Geopolitics, security of energy supply and the changing market conditions in SE Europe and Greece will feature prominently among the topics of this year’s conference.

The conference will be attended by senior executives, scientists, engineers and energy professionals from all the major Greek energy-related companies and also by policy-makers. Participation is also expected from other European countries especially from S.E. Europe and by international electricity, oil and natural gas companies, RES and energy efficiency companies. Representatives from various leading European energy and industry groups and international organizations will also participate and contribute actively to the proceedings of IENE’s Athens conference next October.

The main themes to be covered in this year’s "Energy and Development” conference will include the following:

·Global and regional energy perspectives

·Geopolitical challenges in the evolving energy landscape of SE Europe

·The pivotal role of natural gas in economic development

·The moves by Greece’s energy champions with respect to investments in national and regional oil, gas and electricity markets

·Transformation and evolution of the Greek Electricity Market

·Energy efficiency and RES as key pillars of energy policy

·Re-evaluating Greece’s role in the SE European Energy Map

·Energy supply and security considerations in SE Europe

Geopolitics, sustainability, energy security, related economic development and investments are some of the key parameters of the Greek energy system but also those of other countries in SE Europe, which IENE’s "Energy &Development 2016” will address.

The conference will take place in Athens on October 25-26, 2016 and will be held as usual in the conference centre of the Eugenides Foundation. The conference, which is organized by the Institute of Energy for S.E. Europe (www.iene.eu ) has been established over the past years as a major event in Greece for energy policy and business (in order to view the last two year’s proceedings please visit http://www.iene.gr/energy-development2014/and http://www.iene.gr/energy-development2015/) . Furthermore the conference is organized under the auspices of Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy.
