In view of the highly relevant energy content of this year’s Advance Building Skins conference, which was held in Switzerland’s capital city on October 2-3, IENE’s Executive Committee participated as a delegate following an invitation by the organizers. The conference which focused on buildings and their use of energy proved an eye opener in terms of energy flows through the building envelope, the various skin structures available today to cover even the most complex structures, the integration of photovoltaics (PV) in the external walls and roof of a building, the integration of PV in shading devices etc.

More than 500 delegates attended this well established international event which comprised 39 plenary and parallel sessions which covered such diverse areas as energy efficiency construction and refurbishment, new materials for the building skin, economics and architectural integration of PV into facades, prefabrication techniques and building retrofits, membranes for high energy performance building skins, design strategies for advanced PV facades, kinetic architectural and daylight control, energy response materials for adaptive facades and several other specialist domains, most of them related to optimum energy use within the building envelope. As research and energy related applications for Building Skin structures progresses rapidly the field is wide open for applications in the sun soaked countries of SE Europe. IENE is currently considering the possibility of convening a regional conference on the topic for next year in order to register current interest, discuss latest developments and draw out an agenda for further action in the region.
