IENE’s Research Coordinator, Mr. Nicholas Sofianos, actively participated in the Webinar on " the investment potential of Balkan hydropower”, which took place on June 20, 2017. The Webinar, organized by Vostock Capital, gathered several eminent professionals from SE East Europe and beyond, as well as representatives of several companies and investors active in the Hydroelectricity sector. Mr. Nicholas Sofianos, and Dr. Lorenc Gordani, Executive Director of ACERC were keynote speakers and main contributors who focused on the various aspects of SE Europe’s hydropower potential, contributing constructive views and suggestions on attracting suitable investments for its exploitation.

In his speech, Mr. Sofianos focused on the hydropower market development trends in the region, the evaluation of new opportunities, the development forecast for the next 10 years, while he highlighted specific investment projects which are planned in the region.

According to Mr. Sofianos’ presentation, hydropower is one of the most important indigenous energy resources for electricity production in most of SE Europe and therefore it is of a great strategic importance for the region as a whole. Quoting the findings of IENE’s recently published major reference study "SE Europe Energy Outlook 2016/2017”, Mr. Sofianos pinpointed the sort of hydropower investments that are essential for the region within the next decade (2016-2025). The total hydro investment potential in SE Europe up to 2025 stands at 24 billion Euros, most of them anticipated to be invested in large hydro projects (above 10 MW) the majority of them expected to be invested in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania and Serbia.
