The Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) took part in the public consultation, organized by Greece’s Ministry of Environment and Energy, for the setting up of an Energy Exchange in Athens. The Public Consultation commenced on December 1 and lasted until December 11, 2017.
IENE’s participation in this process aimed primarily in contributing to the overall effort for developing an effective and operational regulatory framework for the management of Greece’s electricity market as stated in the "Target Model”. Thus, IENE’s comments focused on both the necessity for establishing a concise and fully workable framework for the effective operation of the nascent Energy Exchange and on an inclusive approach concerning its actual function. To this end, IENE pointed out the need for adopting a central programming management approach for optimizing electricity balancing and reserve capacity.
It must further be noted that as part of its brief the Institute is planning a special afternoon colloquium in Athens on March 28, 2018, in order to discuss in detail the setting up of Greece’s first Energy Exchange. IENE firmly believes that the establishment of the Energy Exchange will bring about profound changes in the structure and operation of the country’s electricity market, which will to a certain extend impact regional markets.
