On February 9 the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Dr. Fatih Birol, presented the organisation’s flagship publication, World Energy Outlook 2016 to a select audience in Athens. The presentation took place at the Ministry of Environment and Energy where approximately 30 people representing between them Greece’s main state controlled energy companies participated. Following a brief introduction by the Secretary General of the Ministry Mr. Andreas Verroiopoulos IEA’s, Executive Director presented the main findings of WEO 2016 stressing the changing energy demand picture, the increasingly important role of Renewables and IEA’S suite of tools for addressing energy security.
"No peak oil demand yet in sight but a slowdown in growth for oil demand”, Dr. Birol pointed out in his crisp presentation. Another two areas which IEA’s head identified as being of key importance for future developments is LNG and its inroads in natural gas global supply and energy efficiency which together with renewables could help mitigate climate change.
Upon conclusion of the presentation a discussion took place where Prof. Pantelis Capros, Chairman of IENE’s Scientific Council and Head of the EC3 Lab at National Technical University of Athens and Costis Stambolis, IENE’s Executive Director, actively participated.
