Global LNG Tanker Fleet Grows in 2017

The total global LNG tanker fleet consisted of 511 vessels at the end of 2017, an increase of 6.9 percent compared to 2016, according to the annual report of the International Group of LNG Importers (GIIGNL).

The total number of vessels within the LNG tanker fleet was 478 at the end of 2016.

In 2017, the fleet included 28 floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) and 38 vessels of less than 50,000 cubic meters.

Total shipping capacity at the end of last year was around 73.9 million cubic meters, more than 69.3 million cubic meters in 2016.

Total operational capacity in vessels that are considered actively in service amounted to 69.9 million cubic meters.

In 2017, the average spot charter rate for a 160,000 cubic-meter LNG carrier stood at $46,058 per day, compared to an average of $33,528 per day in 2016.

Nineteen new orders were placed, including six FSRUs and five vessels of less than 50,000 cubic meters, compared with 10 new orders placed in 2016.

At the end of 2017, the order book consisted of 120 vessels, of which 109 were above 50,000 cubic meters.

Seventy-two vessels were scheduled for delivery in 2018.
