General Electric to Renew Turkey's Yatagan Coal Plant

General Electric (GE) will start a renewal project for the Aegean Yatagan Coal Power Plant located in Mugla in southwestern Turkey, according to the company's statement on Wednesday.

The statement says that GE signed a deal with Turkish power generation company, Bereket Energy, owner of the Yatagan Coal Power Plant, in order to modernize three steam turbines and generators of the plant.

This is GE's first comprehensive renewal project in Turkey and the company aims to increase the plant's current installed capacity from 180 megawatts (MW) to 228 MW. Additionally, the project intends to raise the service capacity of the plant to 8 thousand hours per year and to prolong the life of the plant by 15 years.

GE will deliver the set of three steam turbines and generators gradually in March 2017 and March 2018 from the manufacturing sites in Poland and Switzerland. The statement says that the first unit of the power plant is expected to become operational by the latest June 2017.

The Yatagan coal plant has a power generation capacity of 630 MW and has been privatized since 2014.
