Future Fuel: Bio LPG Can Reduce Emissions by 80 Percent

Bio LPG will substantially reduce carbon emissions compared to conventional LPG, according to Andrew Ford, group public affairs manager of the Netherlands-based SHV Energy on Wednesday.

Ford said at the European LPG Congress (AEGPL) Congress in Lisbon that bio LPG is a new commercially available biofuel made 100 percent from renewable sources.

He stressed that compared to conventional LPG, bio LPG can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 percent.

The fuel is made completely from renewable crops and waste feed stocks, he said.

"Bio LPG is produced using a mix of renewable and waste material. In use, it is identical to conventional LPG," he explained.

He also said that bio LPG has the same exceptional properties as conventional LPG. "Pure bio LPG can be used for all applications or bio LPG can be blended with standard LPG," he added.

"Buy LPG today, bio LPG tomorrow," he said.

Ford said that Finnish energy company Neste operates a bio LPG facility in Rotterdam with a production capacity of 40,000 tonnes of bio LPG per year.

SHV Energy has been the exclusive distribution company for four years.

The ground breaking ceremony for the world's first bio LPG production refinery was held at Neste's renewable product refinery in Rotterdam in 2015, which began production at the end of 2016.
