European Gas Conference 2017 Attracted Strong IENE ParticipationThis year’s European Gas Conference organized as usual in Vienna attracted strong presence from IENE partners and Associate Members. More specifically IENE’s executive director Costis Stambolis and IENE partner and founding member Spyros Paleoyiannis, in his new capacity as Managing Director of MedGas (following his leave from DEPA last year where he was CEO) actively participated in the various open discussions and roundtables

This year’s European Gas Conference organized as usual in Vienna attracted strong presence from IENE partners and Associate Members. More specifically IENE’s executive director Costis Stambolis and IENE partner and founding member Spyros Paleoyiannis, in his new capacity as Managing Director of MedGas (following his leave from DEPA last year where he was CEO) actively participated in the various open discussions and roundtables. Spyros Paleoyiannis followed closely the LNG focus day on January 23 where key subject areas included "The Changing Global Supply-Demand Balance”, and "New Supplies and Infrastructure Developments” and "The LNG Boom VS Price Volatility”. Spyros took an active part in the proceedings tabling key questions and contributing highly relevant comments.

The second day of EGC (24/01) which was chaired by Professor Jonathan Stern, covered the major issues of European demand and supply with keynote speaker Mr. Alexander Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom’s management committee, followed by Marco Alvera, CEO of Snam. The new and old supply routes for North, Central and SE Europe were discussed at length in a panel which included Alex Barnes of Alex Barnes and Associates Ltd, Florian Ermacora of Unit B2 of the European Commission and Reinhard Mitschek of OMV.

Other important subjects discussed on the third day (25/01) of EGC 2017 included ‘Rethinking Gas in the Shifting Energy Mix”, the new projects for the development of Central and SE European gas markets, trading challenges including the development of new gas trading hubs and market competition but also the need to maintain market share vs maintaining margins. IENE Energy Associates Mr. Christos Papadopoulos, of Energy Exemplar, UK and Professor Andrey Konoplyanik, Russia-EU Advisory Council were also present at EGC 2017 leading and participating, respectively, in separate panel discussions devoted to gas market operation and competition in the EU .
